Description

This Venus of Brassempouy, also called the Pear Venus, was found in 1892 in a cave in France. Only the fat lower body was intact. Discoverer Edouard Piette initially called the statue 'the pear' because of the shape, but Piette soon chose the name 'venus' because of the vulva and venus hill. This figurine became the first image called 'venusfigurine', later on the collective name for naked women's images from prehistory. The height is 10 cm.

This is a reconstruction of the 27,000 year old Venetian statue. Breasts and butts were broken from the original. Striking was the slightly pointed (pear-shaped) belly. There are also small carvings around the waist. It has been speculated that these were tatoes, but it may also be a belt or other decoration.
